Civil society in Tajikistan challenges the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – what support to Tajik citizens abroad?
On 5 May 2020, the website Notorturetj.org wrote that several civil society organizations in Tajikistan sent an open letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan concerning the situation of Tajik citizens in Russia and the organization of institutional support for them.
The letter mentions the situation of about 200 hundreds of Tajik citizens currently held in detention centres for foreign citizens who cannot be sent home (borders are closed), but who are exposed to a high risk of contagion by VIDOC-19.
NGOs are also addressing several issues related to the current crisis:
- What kind of material, social and informational assistance has been provided by the Republic of Tajikistan to its citizens abroad, especially those living in remote parts of Russia?
- What kind of cooperation is organised between representatives of Tajikistan in Russia and diaspora organisations?
- How many vulnerable Tajik citizens are currently living in Russia, how many are infected and how many have died as a result of COVID-19?
- How do institutions plan to defend the rights of migrants, which have been violated since the beginning of the pandemic?
